About Down South DJs
DownSouth DJs was established by me in 2015. It was earlier trading as a first-class entertainment based in Morphett Vale, which I registered in July 2000. In 2002 we won the ABIA award for the mobile DJ category. I feel that my experience of dealing with people from all walks of life during the last 17 years has been quite rewarding for me. I was acting as a master of ceremonies (MC) for over 500 weddings and parties, playing the right mix of music for people from as young as 2 to folks as old as 92. Dancing and having a good time is fantastic for me personally.
I have been working as a mobile DJ around Adelaide suburbs handling many things, including setting up the equipment, lighting and playing the right music entertaining over 100 people over most weekends. Since music played at the wedding can be heard and is crucial for setting up the right mood for the wedding party, it should be selected with utmost caution. For selecting the right kind of music for your wedding, there are a few tips to remember.
- Firstly it is essential to remember that music should not cater to only a single age group. This is because people belong to different age groups at every wedding, starting from children, teenagers, youth, to the elders. Thus, if music is of the choice of only one age group, the others will tend to get bored and sometimes even frustrated.
- The second most important thing to remember while choosing your wedding playlist is that it should not contain songs that may sound awkward or annoying when played aloud in an audience. There are many songs on your iPod that you may personally like, but they may not be very decent to be played when your mother and grandmother accompany you.
- Another thing that should be considered while selecting the songs for your wedding is that they should not all be dance numbers as a wedding should not have a complete dance party feel to it.
- The next point to remember is selecting the right DJ or band. Make sure whatever you hire for the music requirements of your wedding, be it a band or a DJ. You explain your music specifications as well as any restrictions very clear to them. A DJ can be hired when your wedding is more of a fun affair, and a band could be a good option when you want to give an old-school feel to your wedding.
- Also, make sure that the playlist does not have too much variety in tempo and feel of the music as a constant switch of music from rock songs to waltz, old school, or romantic can often become frustrating for the audience.
Apart from the above tips, never forget to add your personal touch to your wedding playlist, as music is the best way to add the essence of your personality to the wedding and convey your feelings for your partner and loved ones through music.
You have a few things to consider.
Vibe: The type of music you pick can set the tone of your wedding and solidify a theme. And it's the thing people most often remember. Think about what musical genre best reflects your personalities and inspires the ambience you want to create: '70s disco or a romantic string quartet?
A throwback big band feel or kick-off-your-shoes rockabilly? The way the music is delivered—by a live band or DJ—also affects the atmosphere. The type of music you want may dictate your decision too—big band sounds are generally best live, for example.
Variety: Regardless of whether you choose a band or DJ, be sure they play slow and fast songs, as well as old and new tunes to encourage all guests to hit the dance floor.
Budget: In the price war, DJs generally cost less, and prices vary depending on equipment requests and whether it's a weekday or weekend. A 12-piece band, for example, will generally be more expensive than a DJ since there are more people to pay. (There are always exceptions; well-known DJs can be just as expensive as live bands.) Band prices vary by the number of musicians, the amount of time you want them to play for, day of the week and what time of year it is.
Space: Have your heart set on an eight-piece band? You first need to check whether the reception site has any restrictions on the number of musicians and pieces of equipment you may bring in and whether there are any electrical power supply or noise limitations. For example, a registered landmark may not allow you to use large speakers. Ask these questions before you start scouting.
You should see them live at some point.
Ideally, you will want to see a DJ or band in action before you commit so you can gauge firsthand the way they dress, improvise and work for the crowd. (Ask to see a taped public performance or attend a dress rehearsal, but never crash another couple's reception.) If that's not possible, ask for a playlist and look for songs you know and love.
If a band sends you their songs or a link to a video, be sure the musicians you hear or see are the same musicians who will play at your reception. Also, ask for referrals from the last few weddings the band or DJ played. Finally, consider your first dance song a test. If the band doesn't know it and is unwilling to learn it, or the DJ doesn't own it and is unwilling to get it, move on.
Tell them your likes and dislikes before you sign.
Know that all professionals should be open to your likes and dislikes. Give them your request list, songs they must play and, perhaps more importantly, a do-not-play list. Worried you'll hear the "Macarena" at your once-in-a-lifetime event? Specifically, prohibit the playing of a song you feel strongly about in your contract.

STAYING ON SCHEDULE
Whether you're working with a wedding planner or not, it's important to have a timeline for your wedding ceremony and the reception. This is where your wedding DJ proves invaluable!
Once we finalise all the details of your wedding day with you, we will create a timeline to keep everyone (including your other vendors) on schedule. In addition to your ceremony start and end time, your timeline will also list any special song dedications, toasts, or blessings you'd like to include.
Once the timeline is set, we stick to it!
We typically arrive about 1-2 hours before our start time so that everything is set and ready to go when it's "I Do" time. With Our DJ Rocks, there won't be any scrambling to complete the soundcheck at the last possible minute. Your entire day will run like a well-oiled machine.
A good wedding DJ is responsible for way more than playing music. They also act as your MC.

Nat is a dedicated consultant who will go above and beyond to ensure that your event vision is understood and achieved.
